Just save your money a little longer, October 6, 2009

Disadvantages: Durability, Performance

"I believe I posted a review on this reel before and was quick to jump the gun when i did so. Like the guy below me my reels would make the worst sound one that would send a chill up your spine when you cast it sometimes. The reel is very smooth when you reel it it was just how it would mess up sometimes casting that I hated. And I bought two that did it so it wasn't just a coincidence. Don't let this scare you away from Daiwa though I upgraded to two 50th anniversary zillions and a 4.9 zillion for cranking. Once i picked up these reels i realized how much a little more money could get you. If you want a good reel just save a little more and buy a zillion those things are rock solid."

Advantages: Style/Design
Disadvantages: Durability

"When I first purchased this reel during the month of May I could not hav been happier. I had it paired up with a G-Loomis 7' MH GL3 and it was awesome! But, as the many others have learned, this reel does not last long. Often when I cast now it was atempt to engage and stop the spool completely. Also makes a terrible sound when I cast. This morning was th final straw however. I hooked a good sized bass and the reel completely disengaged and went into freespool. I'm sure you can finish the story yourself.

I've always loved Diawa for their baitcasters, but now I'm begining to question them. I'll be looking at exchanging this for a shimano more than likely since their spinning reels are fantastic"

For those with squeaky reels...please read, August 22, 2009

Advantages: Ease of use, Quality, Style/Design, Value for money

"I just bought this reel tonight at the store and I'm headed out for a week of bass fishing in Canada. Then I read the review after I got home (Yeah, I know) and got a bit nervous about whether it might clunk out on day one with no replacement in sight.

Here's my contribution: when removing/replacing the spool, the manual says to unscrew the thumbscrew, rotate the endplate, and slide off the endplate. When you put it back in however, you should also loosen the spool tensioner (the shiny knurled knob) or else the tensioner will fight you a little bit putting the endplate back on. If you force the endplate it will carve fine plastic shavings off of the endplate boss. I did not know this the first time I spooled up, and on further inspection I found that there were a couple of small plastic shavings loose under the endplate. While I can't confirm this is what happened to others, the shavings would definitely affect casting and make noise. Definitely have a look in yours.

Having had a look at the insides, I am satisfied with the internal construction at this price point. Brass gearing, shielded ball bearings, and a metal center housing make for a proper main drive. The drive to the worm gear is plastic gearing but that doesn't concern me as there is not much load on these parts. The factory grease job was so-so, I might get bored one day, get out the rubbing alcohol and Hot Sauce and relubricate everything.

I'm looking forward to using this and I'll update the review after a week of use."

hot an everyday reel, August 20, 2009

Advantages: Ease of use, Style/Design
Disadvantages: Durability, Performance, materials

"i got this reel in december and have used it 3-4 times a week. it was fairly solid at first but after the first lubing it started to go down hill. i think i did a good job at puting it together but the clutch would start to slip after the 2-3 time. i managed to fix the problems a few times, but it all of a sudden just died on me and always slips now. i am looking at the rick clunn reel but the pro qualifier has a lube port so that will eliminate the problem of puting the reel together and running into problems if something goes wrong. i would recomend this reel to casual sportsmen, but if you fish an extreame amount like me then look into a reel with more enderance and durability. i ran into alot of the same problems as other people and knew what i was doing. granted i really put this reel through alot of stuff, i feel it could have been made with stronger parts. and if you do choose this reel, be careful not to breack the tab on the side mount cover. not the tightest reel for my taste."
